Puppy Biting
Puppies are adorable, but they also have razor sharp teeth! Here are some things you should know to stop puppy biting.
Why Puppies Bite
Biting is how puppies naturally explore the world, play, and get attention. Your puppy isn't being aggressive- they want to play and engage with you and don't yet understand that humans don't like this kind of play.
Prevention is the Key to Stopping Puppy Biting
Puppy biting is often predictable, occurring at the same times or in specific situations (e.g., on the couch, during work). Prevent biting before it starts:
Identify and Avoid Triggers (when possible): Recognize when your puppy might bite, such as when they are tired, overstimulated, or need a walk or chew toy. Change your daily routine or skip over-exciting activities to minimize opportunities for biting.
Manage Energy Levels: Over-excited puppies are more likely to bite. Add regular cool-down breaks during playtimes and interrupt frequently with any activity where your puppy gets over-aroused.
