Puppy Biting

Puppies are adorable, but they also have razor sharp teeth! Here are some things you should know to stop puppy biting.

Why Puppies Bite

Biting is how puppies naturally explore the world, play, and get attention. Your puppy isn't being aggressive- they want to play and engage with you and don't yet understand that humans don't like this kind of play.

Prevention is the Key to Stopping Puppy Biting

Puppy biting is often predictable, occurring at the same times or in specific situations (e.g., on the couch, during work). Prevent biting before it starts:

  • Identify and Avoid Triggers (when possible): Recognize when your puppy might bite, such as when they are tired, overstimulated, or need a walk or chew toy. Change your daily routine or skip over-exciting activities to minimize opportunities for biting.

  • Manage Energy Levels: Over-excited puppies are more likely to bite. Add regular cool-down breaks during playtimes and interrupt frequently with any activity where your puppy gets over-aroused.

  • Provide Alternatives: Use puppy-safe chew toys or food puzzles to satisfy their chewing needs and soothe teething discomfort. Activities like short training sessions and puppy-safe exercise can also tire your pup and reduce biting tendencies.

What to Do If Your Puppy Starts To Bite or Get Mouthy

  • Remove Attention for Biting: Calmly pull your arm away or stand up to remove attention. Step over a baby gate, into an exercise pen or behind a closed door if needed to create a brief separation. Wait a few seconds before re-engaging, looking for calm behavior first.

  • Redirect: Offer a chew or tug toy to redirect their behavior.

  • Reward Default Behaviors: Encourage calm actions by rewarding them with attention and treats. When your puppy plays without biting, praise them or offer a treat to reinforce good behavior.

  • Be Consistent: If every time your puppy bites you stop interacting, they will learn that biting ends the fun! Don’t engage any time your puppy tries to play using their teeth.

What to Avoid When Your Puppy is Biting

  • We don't recommend saying "Ouch" or yelping to limit your puppy's mouthing- all of this can increase the biting because your puppy is getting your attention!

  • Don’t Use Hands as Toys: This teaches puppies that biting hands is acceptable.

  • Don’t Punish: Yelling, hitting, or harsh corrections can scare your puppy and damage your bond.

When to Consult a Trainer if Your Puppy is Biting

If biting becomes aggressive, happens outside of play, or you’re struggling to manage it, a certified trainer can provide tailored help.
